July 24,1908

July 24
He woke about 9:30 and read letters in the bedding.
He had breathed cut tobacco 5 or 6 times this day. He had no more cigarette.
He tried to stop thinking about smoking, put his cigarette case out of his sight, put the pillow in a grass woven mat and lay down there.
He had dinner and went out to visit a person. The person had no money, neither.
He had no more goods for changing into money. When he was leaning on the back of the chair, then, an envelope was delivered. It was the payment for his poems. 11 pieces of stamps (=0.33 yen) were enclosed.
With these stamps he got 3 boxes of cigarette. The swaying smoke gave his eyes a pleasure.
He went to Kyosuke’s room and was staying there until 10:00.
Before he put off the lamp and slept, from a temple in the neighbor, the sound of a drum started to come. A bell in a distance showed 4:00. There were cool sounds of cicadas for a while and the sound of grass woven sandals of a milkman outside the window.
