In the morning, he went to a pawnshop to change his shawl into 0.6 yen.
He had a crew cut in a barbershop and bought washcloth and soap.
When he was going to enter the public bath opposite the barbershop, the keeper’s charming wife let him know they would not be ready until 11:00 because it’s inspection day.

He asked the landlord’s child walking along the corridor to give him kindling charcoal and hot water. 20 minutes later, a maid brought his breakfast without a bamboo made spoon for serving rice. He pushed the buzzer. No maid came. He pushed again. No. After waiting long, a maid, Otsune, came and put it without saying anything. The miso soup had already been cold.
