In the morning, he went to a pawnshop to change his shawl into 0.6 yen.
He had a crew cut in a barbershop and bought washcloth and soap.
When he was going to enter the public bath opposite the barbershop, the keeper’s charming wife let him know they would not be ready until 11:00 because it’s inspection day.
When he’s reading a novel in the bedding, Kyosuke came and asked him if he had hot water.

－ as a part of Japanese living culture and social history especially urbanization in Tokyo －

In Japan, the Westernization from 明治時代 Meiji Era ( 1868 - 1912 ) was partly establishing Western style schools, for example, Western law schools, medical schools in Tokyo with the top of them, Tokyo University.Many students from countryside had their sleeping spaces and meals in 下宿屋 geshukuya, Japanese boarding houses.
下宿屋 geshukuya had its origin in 旅館 ryokan, Japanese inn, giving sleeping spaces and meals likeg下宿屋 eshukuya as the hotel were the origin of the residential hotel.In下宿屋 ｇeshukuya, there were not only students living there, but also people staying for some days like guests of 旅館 ryokan.Some 下宿屋 geshukuya had changed into 旅館 ryokan again, especially in 本郷 Hongoh area near Tokyo University. For example, today’s 太栄館 Taieikan ( former 蓋平館 Gaiheikan where the writer of the original diary, 石川啄木 Takuboku Ishikawa, not a student but a person living alone in Tokyo like a student, was living from September 6, 1908 to June 16, 1909 ), 鳳明館 Homeikan and etc. A lot of owners of下宿屋 geshukuya also came from countryside, including some brothers and relatives from 岐阜 Gifu district near 名古屋 Nagoya to本郷 Hongoh area, the first owners of鳳明館 Homeikan and 本郷館 Hongokan which has been still now since 1905 , the ancestors’ of today’s owners of太栄館 Taieikana and 鳳明館 Homeikan and others. Some owners of下宿屋 geshukuya were large-income earner and members of the本郷 Hongoh ward assembly and can be found in 日本紳士録 Japan Who’s Who. For example, the first owner of 鳳明館 Homeikan was elected in 1920 and can be found in日本紳士録 Japan Who’s Who published in 1909, 1918～1927, 1929～1934, 1936, 1937.
Not like Western boarding houses nor residential hotels, but just like 旅館 ryokan including today’s太栄館 Taieikan, 鳳明館 Homeikan and others, in geshukuya, without dining room for guests, each meal was served to each guest’s bed room an下宿屋 d sometimes they had shared bath.In 下宿屋 geshukuya, room maids were bringing to each guest’s bed room not only meals but also charcoal for the brazier, newspaper, letters・・・opening and closing 雨戸 amado, sliding wooden doors outside the window, sweeping・・・
In 下宿屋 geshukuya, each guest spent one’s young days among room maids working well, sometimes doing 生花 ikebana, Japanese flower arrangement by oneself for each 床の間 tokonoma, display corner in the wall and reading books rented from 貸本屋 kashihon-ya, rental peddler visiting to each bed room.
下宿屋 geshukuya, Japanese boarding house was born by the Westernization in Japan but different a lot from Western boarding houses.

About 9:00, he went to a restaurant with Kyosuke, ate Japanese fries, drank and talked a lot.
At 12:00, he came back drunken and slept down.

They ate Japanese noodle and drank beer in a restaurant near the geshukuya.
He came back and slept at 11:00.
He had experienced the Sunday of Tokyo for the first time.

The sky had cleared up and the sun had set.
The sunset shine was changing moment by moment and the color of the night was crawling step by step from the surface of roofs.
The moon was shining above the chimney top of the army factory.
He was lying down on his back in the small veranda outside of the window, watching the sky and hearing the sound of the town vacantly. Many things were coming up to his mind.
He read Genji and slept.

In the evening in Kyosuke’s room, drinking beer and eating Japanese noodle, he was reading Chinese classic poems. He came back to his room around 11:30.

A friend came in the afternoon. They went to a shrine and watched religious dances and a movie. He came back a little before 11:00.
From this day, the kinky hair near-sighted maid “Oshin” had taken charge of the third floor. She and the elder sharp tongue “Otsune” spoke also in their dialect. “Otake” with decayed teeth brought up in Tokyo. The most modern, “Ohide” was making jokes all day. “Osue” was 11 years old, taller for her age and spoke in clear Tokyo dialect.

He lay down earlier, read Genji and slept.

A phone call from a friend. He hated the telephone. It’s terrible for him. It’s 4 years since he talked by telephone last time. He didn’t get used to it. He explained to the maid he’s smoking and could not go there and told her to ask the purpose of the telephone. She said the person had got a postcard from him nothing was written. Unwillingly he went to the place of the telephone.
Then, he thought he could accept any call.

He decided to read Genji for a while every night before sleeping.

It’s 3 and a half grass mats wide room in a strange shape. It’s called “ The hole in the third floor”. It’s facing a hill across a valley full of roofs below his eyes. It’s brave that on the left, 3 tall chimneys of the army factory were keeping to give out black smoke.According to a maid, Mt. Fuji could be seen in sunny days.The heaven was close, blue and wide to his eyes. The insect songs were coming up from a distance. Kyosuke got angry and went around this morning to find another geshukuya.He made a joke that he would shelter Kyosuke even if he would be dead.Kyosuke decided to sell books for paying all his rent and moving. A man of the bookstore came late in the afternoon.While waiting for the man of the bookstore, they were playing Japanese chess. He was beaten by Kyosuke.Toward evening, they started to pack their things.A little past 5:00, they had moved to another geshukuya, “Gaihei-kan-besso蓋平館別荘”. It’s new and 3 storied. From the gate of stone poles to the entrance, there was a flat stone paved pass. Since a few days ago, a some 30’s lady had been staying in the ground floor. They said she was a younger sister of the landlady. According to a maid, it was very helpful as the landlady was sick. In the morning, while washing his face, he heard someone saying she had been separated.

After sunset, he went out and bought a vase , while a lady came to see him and went back.
It’s a peace of his mind to be sleeping in his room full of the vague scent of lilies.

The largest one was about 15 mm. They were bouncing on the tile roof next to the geshukuya. He opened the paper covered sliding window doors and watched outside. It stopped before sunset.
